פרשת בלק

מה טובו אהליך יעקב משכנותך ישראל כ'ד| ה

“How goodly are your tents, Yaakov, your dwelling places, Yisroel”

What prompted Bilam to bless the tents of Yaakov?

The Oznaim Latorah explains that the  Gemara (Bova Basra) relates that the wicked Bilam, infamous for his ‘evil eye’, was searching for a fault amongst the Yidden to thereby make his curse more potent ח'ו. Instead, he could not help notice that all the entrances to the tents had been deliberately offset from one another to avoid even an inadvertent glimpse into a neighboring tent, a term coined in Gomorah as היזק ראיה ‘damage’ caused by impinging on another’s privacy.

Hence, HaShem protected the Yidden measure for measure, i.e. the Yidden were spared the evil eye of Bilam due to their avoidance of causing היזק ראיה to their neighbors.
