Quick Tip: Teaching Strategies: Jigsaws
The Jigsaw is a powerful cooperative learning technique which employs both independent and interdependent learning. Each student takes ownership for learning and becoming “an expert” in a specific section of information. He is then responsible to teach the material he has learned to everyone in his team. His role as “teacher” makes him and his learning essential to others. Therefore each student perceives his own importance and belonging, which brings a powerful intrinsic reward to his learning.
The Jigsaw Strategy:
Jigsaw Teams: Divide class into teams of the same number students.
Divide content into as many sections as there are students in a team.
Assign a different section of content to each student in each team so that each team has 1 person assigned to a section of content and all sections are assigned to each team.
Students work independently to learn their assigned content.
Expert Groups: After students have completed their independent work, have students assigned to the same content (1 student from each team) meet as “Expert Groups” to discuss and compare the information they learned. This is especially important for weaker students, who can then fill in gaps and clear up any misconceptions of the knowledge they learned.
After students have completed their cooperative work in their Experts Groups, students return to their Jigsaw Teams and take turns teaching their assigned content to the rest of their team. Students’ mastery of content is based on this interdependent learning.
