And you should make two Keruvim of gold

The gemara in Chagigah explains that the word כרוב is derived from the Aramaic term for child, because the Keruvim were fashioned in the form of a child’s face.

Furthermore, Chazal deduce that in time of need, utensils in the Beis HaMikdosh that are ordinarily made of gold may be substituted with silver ones.  The exception to this rule is the Keruvim that must only be made of pure gold. Rav Meir Shapiro Zt”l explains that this anomaly is alluding to the concept that although in many matters if the best means are difficult to obtain, one need not over exert oneself to obtain the best and may utilize the next best available, when it comes to the Chinuch of one’s children, nothing but the best will do.
