Students can “light “the Chanukah candles each day on a glittering felt board menorah. Learning the order of placing Chanukah candles in the menorah, as well as the order in which they are lit each night, also serves to introduce the directional concepts of right and left.

Goals and Objectives: The student will learn the halachos related to the order of placing the candles in the menorah and the order in which they should be lit. They will be able to “light” a candle to count each day of Chanukah. Since new candles are added from right to left but lit from left to right, students will learn the directional concepts of right and left.
Skills Needed: Students require fine motor skills to manipulate felt pieces.
Skills Developed: The student will develophand-eye coordination, pincer grasp, spatial discrimination, visual discrimination, counting and pre-math skills and the concepts of right and left.

      Materials needed for felt board:

  • 2 legal size folders (9”x14”)
  • Black felt for felt board background approx. 28”x16”
  • Glue stick
  • 3M double sided tape #469
  • Scissors
  • Laminate

Please note that if you only wish to temporarily change the background color of an existing felt board you will need a piece of black felt 30”x18”and clear or maskingtape.

Materials needed for Chanukah activity:

  • Felt sheet 9’X12” royal blue
  • Felt sheet 9”x 12” in any light neutral color
  • ½ felt sheet 9”x6” yellow felt
  • Small piece white felt about 3”x7”
  • Small piece purple felt 5”x8”
  • 1 sheet silver glitter adhesive backed foam approximately 9”x12”
  • ½ sheet yellow glitter adhesive backed foam approximately 6”x9”
  • Small square yellow felt  4”x4”
  • 2 felt sheets 9”x12” turquoise felt or color of choice (for “curtain” border trim)
  • Menorah templates (attached)
  • Die cut menorah #2 – use die cut of large candle or attached template
  • Die cut handprint #15 or attached template
  • Die cut star tiny #28 or attached template
  • Die cut border scallop #9 or attached template
  • Clear tape
  • Black permanent marker or  “L” and “R”   letter stickers and 2 small arrow stickers
